Computing fence designs for orienting parts

چکیده
A common task in automated manufacturing processes is to orient parts prior to assembly. We consider sensorless orientation of a polygonal part by a sequence of fences. We show that any polygonal part can be oriented by a sequence of fences placed along a conveyor belt, thereby settling a conjecture by Wiegley et al. [17], and present the rst polynomial-time algorithm to compute the shortest such sequence. The algorithm is easy to implement and runs in time O(n logn), where n is the number of vertices of the part.

Orienting polygons with fences over a conveyor belt: empirical observations
This paper re-examines a part orienting technique that orients polygonal shaped parts with a series of fences suspended above a conveyor belt. We examine the effect of uncertainty in the coefficient of friction as well as the typical size of the final assembly. The search technique in the original work although resolution complete1, was inefficient, so we offer a heuristic search method that of...
متن کاملFlexible Part Orienting Using Rotation Direction and Force Measurements
This paper presents a novel sensor-based flexible part orienting system based around the commonly available force/torque sensor. The system orients planar parts arriving on a conveyor belt via a sequence of pushing operations with a force/torque sensor equipped fence. A method to use the raw force data from the sensor to infer the rotation direction of the part is presented. Algorithms utilisin...
متن کاملCurved Fences for Part Alignment
In automated packing or assembly it is often necessary to bring randomly oriented parts into uniform alignment. Mechanical methods such as vibratory bowl feeders are often used for this purpose, although there is no theory for the systematic design of such feeders. A slanted “fence” attached to the stationary sides of a conveyor belt is also capable of orienting a stream of parts and a sequence...
متن کاملToward Application of an Active Fence for Object Detection, Manipulation and Alignment on Conveyer Belt
This paper presents a novel approach for orienting an object on conveyer belt utilizing an Active Fence. The Active fence was implemented with low cost sensory system used for tracking the contact/collision force generated from interaction between the Active Fence and the object. A generalized mechanical model of the collision/contact event is developed and basic relations between impact signat...
متن کاملBlack bear exclusion fences to protect mobile apiaries
Demand for commercial bee (Apis mellifera) services recently has increased, resulting in greater use of mobile apiaries for crop pollination. When commercial apiaries are moved into areas occupied by black bears (Ursus americanus), conflicts between beekeepers and bears sometimes occur. Commercial pollination often involves moving apiaries among agricultural fields, and, thus, permanent fencing...
